I'm pretty interested in David's appeal to this work. The reviews I read simply say 'amazing', 'thrilling', 'beautiful', but don't give any details as to why their music is any of those things. I am clearly missing something, so would love for someone to set me straight.
I purchased Metallica and Lou Reed's 'Lulu' album based on Metallica's name and that is my least favorite album I've ever purchased. Lou's "vocals" are like nails on a chalk board for me. So I went into this week a little skeptical, but curious what he sounded like 40 years ago.
I'm trying to keep in perspective of the era in which this came out, but it is a little reminiscent of the Beach Boys only a lot slower and much darker lyrics. Lou's vocals are almost as flat as my experience with Lulu, but the tuning of the instruments seems to play off of this and make it more tolerable. Each song stands out from the prior one, which is a plus as I tend to fall into a trance with these types of albums and wake up realizing it is over. However, none of them do much for me, either good or bad. There isn't much energy for me to feed off, or any lyrics which I can relate to. I think with some more perspective and maybe some repetition I could learn to appreciate this more. As it stands, it exceeded my low expectations, but not by much.
